Yacht-race art brings colour to shops

EMPTY shops in what was once one of Hull's premier shopping streets are to be redecorated today as part of a piece of public art celebrating the city's role in the current Clipper Round The World Yacht Race.

Overhead street banners and window vinyls in six disused shops in Whitefriargate are being unveiled by Hull-born artist Pinky.

The project, which also celebrates Hull's maritime heritage, has been commissioned by Hull Council and Hull Forward.

Paul Holloway, arts development manager at the council, said: "We are delighted to have been able to commission such wonderfully colourful and appropriate works for the summer and the Clipper Race from an excellent artist who is Hull born and bred.

"We hope that these works will add real colour and vibrancy to Whitefriargate and help to create a fantastic welcome for the Clipper crews in July and visitors and shoppers throughout the summer."

Pinky said: "I love Hull and my vision for Whitefriargate is to turn the street into a huge open-air art gallery."

Hull is acting as the host port in the epic 35,000-mile biennial yacht race, which is due to end in the Humber with the return of the 10-strong fleet on July 17, after 10 months of racing.
