Yorkshire airport tops temperatures

A Yorkshire airport was the hottest place in Britain on a record-breaking October weekend when sunbathers basked in sweltering conditions warmer than Madrid, Majorca and Ibiza.

The mercury reached 30C (86F) at Robin Hood Airport, near Doncaster, on Saturday, making it not only the hottest day recorded in the UK in October, but the third warmest of 2011.

But forecasters believe the heatwave will soon be over, with temperatures expected to return to normal by the end of the week.

The temperature at the airport was confirmed by MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association.

The previous October record of 29.4C was set in March, Cambridgeshire, in 1985.

The highest temperature recorded in Yorkshire by the Met Office was 28.6C in Church Fenton at 3.20pm on Saturday.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said it had been very warm across the region, although a little cooler in coastal areas.

Bridlington recorded a high of 21C, but there were temperatures of up to 24C in towns and villages south of the Humber.

Mr Snell said: “In late September and early October, Yorkshire would normally be looking at about 17C as a highest temperature.

“Sunday was cooler than Saturday, but the temperatures were still high – 26C at Humberside Airport at 1pm, for example.”

Temperatures are expected to remain above average today, although conditions will become more unsettled during the week.

Mr Snell said: “On Wednesday, a new weather system from the Atlantic will bring some rain for a time and it will be breezy or quite gusty in places.

“By Thursday we will be looking at maybe 15C or 16C. From then onwards, it will be quite showery.”
