Yorkshire city flies the flag for anniversary

ONE of England’s oldest cities led the celebrations at the weekend to mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s ascension to the throne as more events are planned for the landmark today.

Businesses flew 100 Union flags across Ripon, while the city’s Market Square was decorated with bunting and the town hall windows draped in the commemorative colours. A service was also held at Ripon Cathedral yesterday to commemorate the ascension on February 6, 1952.

Meanwhile, a book of good wishes is being created by the Vulcan to the Sky Trust based at Robin Hood Airport, near Doncaster, which is responsible for the last remaining flying example of the Cold War aircraft. People can send in tributes for the book, which will be presented to Buckingham Palace at the end of the year. And a Royal salute will be fired at noon today in York’s Museum Gardens to mark the 60th anniversary.
