Yorkshire city looks to the East at culture event

YORK’S world famous-heritage will be showcased at a major international conference in China as the city looks to bolster its burgeoning links with the Far East.

York Council’s chief executive Kersten England and York University’s Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dr Jane Grenville, will be among a six-strong delegation of key note speakers from the UK travelling to the China-UK Cultural Heritage event in Zhouzhuang on April 20. The flights for the six-day trip are being paid for by the British Council’s UK Now project, which is funded by the private sector, while the accommodation costs are being covered by the Chinese authorities.

The UK delegation will join Chinese policy-makers, scholars and practitioners to discuss government policy-making and involving young people in heritage protection. Ms England pledged to use the visit to build on York’s links with the Far East. The city has the second highest concentration of Chinese students in the region.
