The Yorkshire Post Says: As rail fares skyrocket, Northern must remember it's running a public service

IN the week that it was confirmed that rail commuters will face a 3.6 per cent fare increase in 2018, the highest for five years, it's even more important that train operators like Northern recognise that they're supposed to be providing a public service. If only this was the case.

Proposed timetable changes on the line from Leeds to Harrogate and York, a key commuter route, appear to be exasperating passengers because of the number of services that will only stop intermittently at certain stations.

If the Harrogate Line Supporters Group is to be believed, these changes appear to be driven by a shortage of rolling stock rather than the needs of the travelling public.

This cannot be right. If this is the case, officials from Northern – and the Department for Transport – need to come here and experience rush-hour overcrowded services for themselves, and then make the case for additional investment.
