Yorkshire skincare firm receives £150,000 investment from Brewdog founder James Watt

A Yorkshire-based skincare firm has been given a £150,000 investment after taking part in Brewdog founder James Watt’s The Next Unicorn contest.

Uncouth, which was founded by Bradford-born dermatology doctor Emma Horton, recently joined four other businesses in Las Vegas for the final of the competition.

All five firms in attendance were eventually selected for investment after an initial 780 applicants to the scheme.

“It feels really surreal,” said Dr Horton.

“The investment means we can spend some money on our platform, and do some marketing, which we haven’t yet been able to do. We’re really excited to get going.”

Uncouth has been selected for investment before its official launch, which is set to take place later this year.

The online-based skincare firm will allow customers to fill out a medical questionnaire including a picture, which is then sent to be signed off by a pharmacist. It is focussed on treating issues including acne and rosacea.

The business will then send out a specially formulated cream, combining products or lowering their strength to match the customer’s needs.

In addition to the investment from Mr Watt, each of the winning firms will also be placed on online investment platform Crowdcube, enabling them to gain further investment.

Uncouth hopes to bring its total investment figure to around £250,000 through being placed on the platform.
