Yorkshire universities in running for TV top spot

Teams from two Yorkshire universities have made it through the quarter-finals of the long-running television series University Challenge.

The University of Sheffield joined the University of York in the last eight after beating University College London 250-230 on Monday night's programme, hosted by Newsnight's Jeremy Paxman.

The Sheffield team is made up of postgraduate students Andy Bolton and Tristram Cole, and undergraduates Hugh Bennett and Tom Thirkell.

They thrashed the University of Newcastle 315-70 in round one.

York edged out the University of Exeter 195-140 in the second round two weeks ago, after beating the Royal College of Music 245-105 in round one.

Its team consists of Andrew Clemo, Simon Donnelly, Ben Keane and Chris Caudwell.

Bradford University is the only Yorkshire institution to have won the series since its inception which it did in 1979.
