Asparagus grown in Yorkshire tastes better and is better for you than imported varieties.

Research by the Regional Food Group for Yorkshire and Humber (RFG) has shown that Yorkshire-reared asparagus has more antioxidants and is a rich source of vitamins, folic acid and iron.

Yorkshire-grown asparagus also contains higher levels of chlorophyll and anthocyanin, providing higher sugar levels which give a sweeter taste

Sarah Knapper of the RFG conducted the research in partnership with the Stockbridge Technology Centre near York, and said her group may conduct further studies on other vegetables.

She said: “We hope our findings encourage people to buy British and regional produce, not only to boost the country’s economy but because taste isn’t compromised.”

The wholesale value of the UK asparagus crop last year was 36m.
