PRIME Minister David Cameron has promised Yorkshire will not be left behind as the economy improves and accused Labour of neglecting the North when it was last in power.

On a tour of the region today he will highlight the creation of 110,000 private sector jobs in Yorkshire in the past three years as a sign that “our country is turning a corner” and seeing the rewards from taking “painful” decisions.

But, in an echo of his Conservative Party Conference speech last week, he will warn that “the struggle of the past few years will only be worth it if we finish the job we started”.

Speaking ahead of his visit to Yorkshire, Mr Cameron said: “This is about far more than just clearing up Labour’s mess – it’s about building something better for the years to come.

“As our economy recovers, all hardworking people have got to share in the success. That’s especially true in the north of England, which Labour neglected for years.

“Even during Labour’s so-called ‘boom years’, the economy here fell behind; businesses in the South created ten times as many jobs as those in the North.

“I am absolutely determined that isn’t going to happen this time.”

Mr Cameron said the Government was building an economic recovery that “everyone can share in” and Ministers understood the need to help people keep money in their pockets.

He promised there would be further announcements in the coming weeks on measures to help families cope with the rising cost of living.

“Times are still tough and people need the Government to be on their side,” he said.

The Prime Minister added: “This is a fantastic part of Britain with a proud history: the corner of England that gave the world everything from stainless steel to the beer pump.

“I want Yorkshire’s future to be as great as its past – and all hardworking people here to be a part of it.”
