Yorkshire's star turn in pilgrimage tribute to British film

However, Shiregreen Working Men's Club in Sheffield – made famous by The Full Monty hit film is back in the limelight after being included as one of the destinations in a so-called Brit Flick Pilgrimage.

Car giant Vauxhall has teamed up with Visit Britain to create the road trip, which spans 1,016 miles and takes in locations used for films including Harry Potter, The Da Vinci Code and Monty Python And The Holy Grail."

In all, 10 stops are listed which together cover 23 locations used in 39 films.

Stephanie Lucas from Vauxhall said: "It's amazing the number of UK locations used in international blockbusters, so we thought we'd pay homage to the best of British by devising a road trip with a twist."

The tour begins in Scotland, taking in destinations including Glencoe and Edinburgh, before moving to north-east England – home of Harry Potter and Billy Elliott.

After a trip down the A1, holidaymakers will then arrive in the region to visit three famous film settings, Chatsworth and Haddon Hall in Derbyshire and the working men's club in Shiregreen, which together make up the Lords, Ladies and Leaving Your Hat On tour stop.

Chatsworth is instantly recognisable to Jane Austen fans as Pemberley, the lavish estate of Mr Darcy in Joe Wright's 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

The nearby rocky outcrop of Stanage Edge, above Hathersage, was also featured in an iconic sequence in the film where Keira Knightley, as Elizabeth Bennett, looks out over the Peak District landscape.

As well as Pride and Prejudice, Chatsworth was also used as the setting for this year's film The Wolfman and the 2008 release The Duchess.

Chatsworth spokesman Simon Seligman said: "The Chatsworth estate offers numerous superb location possibilities, including the house itself, the garden, the famous water features, the rockeries and the maze.

"With its magnificent scenery, good transport links by road, rail and air and excellent facilities for productions, Chatsworth is an ideal film location."

Another destination on the tour is Haddon Hall, a medieval manor house in Bakewell which was used for a 1996 Hollywood production of Jane Eyre, along with Elizabeth in 1998, The Princess Bride in 1987, and 2008's The Other Boleyn Girl.

In Sheffield, meanwhile, the tour takes film buffs not only to Shiregreen but to such salubrious hot spots as the JobCentre in West Street.

A spokesman for Vauxhall said: "The Full Monty sights start at the JobCentre – not a traditional location, but it's where the unemployed lads from the film sign on.

"When slipping into their dance routines, the unlikely striptease troupe practiced at the sporting centre at 73 Burton Street.

"Meanwhile, the famous working men's club is niftily spliced together from two separate locations.

"You'll recognise the exterior as Regency House on Idsworth Road – now a carpet warehouse – but the actual club, where the lads finally bared all, was Shiregreen Working Men's Club in Shiregreen Lane, which is still proudly advertising itself as the home of The Full Monty."

Sheffield Council's tourism manager Wendy Ulyett added: "Although The Full Monty was filmed in the 90s it still attracts people to the city and this is always positive, as we have so much to offer."

After stopping off in the region, the Brit Flick Pilgrimage moves south for a whistle-stop tour of Oxfordshire, London, Surrey, Pembrokeshire, Wiltshire and Somerset, before finishing off at the southern tip of the UK in Cornwall.

The trip, which was created with the help of film historian Tony Reeves, has been introduced to mark the introduction of the new British-built Vauxhall Astra.

Justin Reid from Visit Britain said: "Film tourism has become very popular in the last few years, with films such as the Harry Potter series estimated to have brought in 9m in tourist revenue to Alnwick Castle, with a 120 per cent increase in visitors."
