‘YOU EXPECT TO TAKE BATTERING WITH disease, BUT I HAVEN’T’

PETER Swinden is the first patient in the country to take part in the ARISTOTLE research into bowel cancer.

The 57-year-old from Leeds was diagnosed with bowel cancer in September and referred to specialists at St James’s Hospital.

In addition to the standard five-week course of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, which means Mr Swinden visits the hospital on a daily basis, ARISTOTLE added a chemotherapy injection once a week.

So far, the results have been very positive, with no side-effects. “Cancer is a rollercoaster of emotions,” he said. “However even after two days of treatment I noticed a massive improvement and couldn’t believe it.

“The treatment is a doddle and my energy levels haven’t dipped at all. You expect to take a battering with cancer, but I simply haven’t.”
