Young artists submit record entries for open exhibition

YOUNG artists have submitted a record number of entries to this year's annual junior open exhibition at the Ferens.

More than 300 pieces by children aged 15 and under were entered, including drawings, paintings, prints, collage, chalk drawings, and textiles.

Prizes were presented to the best on Saturday by special guest and children's illustrator Deborah Allwright, whose work includes acclaimed illustrations of the best-selling The Night Pirates and She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain.

Claire Longrigg, Hull Council's assistant curator of exhibitions at the Ferens, said: "The junior open is a great opportunity for children to have their own work on show in the gallery, and they love bringing their family in to see their work.

"It's great that we have had a significant increase in children submitting artwork to the junior open this year. Visitors will be overwhelmed by the quality of the work on display from all age groups, which is of a really high standard."

Prizes were donated by the Friends of the Ferens and The National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies.

The exhibition is on show until January 23, apart from December 13 to 15, while the gallery will be closed from December 24 to 28 and on January 1.
