Your Yorkshire bucket list: Ride the Settle-Carlisle line and take tea at Betty’s

AFTERNOON tea at Betty’s and visiting York Minster are among an abundance of quintessentially Yorkshire activities voted into a new national tourism bucket list.

The region boasts 15 of the attractions on VisitEngland’s list of 101 things for homegrown holidaymakers to see and do, announced to mark St George’s Day yesterday.

The Yorkshire Dales offers the richest pickings, with caving in the national park; wild swimming in Grassington; visiting Malham Cove; and taking a trip on the Settle to Carlisle steam train all recommended by the tourist board.

Walking the Pennine Way, which passes through the Dales on its way from the Derbyshire Peak District to the Scottish borders, is also on the list along with the Coast to Coast trek, which passes through both the Dales and the North York Moors.

Mountain biking in Dalby Forest is named as another must for tourists to tick off along with roaming and climbing in the Peak District.

Visiting the Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Wakefield and the Royal Armouries museum in Leeds, seeing the snowdrops at Fountains Abbey near Ripon and eating chocolate in York also feature on the list.

Lady Cobham, chairwoman of VisitEngland, which narrowed down the list from public nominations, said: “We have such an embarrassment of riches in this country that we couldn’t include every single landmark - but the end result is a mix of the most incredible and unique experiences with something for everyone.”
