Adcocks set for tasty reunion with Bankier

Chris Adcock could be set for a reunion with his former mixed doubles partner Imogen Bankier in the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games.

England’s Adcock, who now plays alongside wife Gabby of Leeds, has been pitched into the same side of the draw as Scotland’s Bankier, who is partnering the experienced Robert Blair in Glasgow.

An Anglo-Scottish clash of the former colleagues – Blair is also a former England international – for a place in the final could be one of the highlights of the Games competition.

Adcock and Bankier won silver at the World Championships in 2011, but fared poorly at the London 2012 Olympics. Bankier’s subsequent decision to base herself back in Scotland then led to the demise of their partnership.

Chris and Gabby Adcock are now ranked fifth in the world and top seeds in Glasgow, but Blair and Bankier, third seeds, triumphed when they met at the German Open earlier this year.

Gabby Adcock, with partner Lauren Smith, will definitely face Bankier in the women’s doubles, having been drawn against her in the pick of the first-round matches. Bankier will partner Kirsty Gilmour.

The absence of world No 1 Lee Chong Wei – one of the all-time greats – makes men’s singles gold a realistic target for England’s Rajiv Ouseph. The third seed starts against Zambia’s Chongo Mulenga.

Before the individual events, however, the team competition will be played.

Scotland will feature in Group C alongside New Zealand, Guernsey and the Seychelles.

England are in Group F with Mauritius, Jersey and Northern Ireland. Wales’ Group D opponents are Australia, Canada and the Falkland Islands.

The Leeds-born duo of Kate Robertshaw, 23, and Andrew Ellis, 27, are in action in the team event today, with both contesting the doubles later in the tournament.
