Blades boss reacts to 'bizarre' defeat

Sheffield United boss Gary Speed was understandably frustrated after seeing his side spurn a host of opportunities in the 4-0 defeat to Scunthorpe.

Chris Dagnall scored twice and there were also goals for David Mirfin and substitute Martyn Woolford as the Iron responded superbly to the recent departure of Nigel Adkins.

Speed was also angered by the performance of referee Neil Swarbrick, who failed to spot an apparent handball by Dagnall prior to his opener. Swarbrick also ruled out a Johnny Ertl goal with the score at 1-0 before turning down strong home appeals for a penalty when Richard Cresswell tumbled in the area.

"It was a bizarre game really," said Speed.

"Firstly, credit to Scunthorpe, they played great in their manager's (caretaker boss Ian Baraclough) first game, you can't fault them. But they had a lot of help tonight and took advantage of it.

"Their first goal, if you look at the video it's blatant handball. Then we had a goal disallowed. I've seen the video and I haven't got a clue what they disallowed it for."
