Blaydon 50 Otley 19: Eight-try hammering for Otley

Otley were already down but Blaydon required a win to avoid relegation and, whilst there may have been little difference in style, the sides were poles apart in application.

The previous week, in similar circumstances, Coventry were made to fight hard by Otley. This time, there was a distinct lack of effort.

Otley showed enterprise by running back the deep kick-off only to concede a penalty which went into touch and, after signalling a second penalty, the referee allowed advantage before returning to the spot.

Whilst Otley strolled back, scrum-half Matt Mellish took a quick tap to put hooker Matt Hall over, fly-half Andrew Baggett kicking the first of five successive conversions.

This set the scene and by half-time Otley were 28 points down, their best spell ending when, against the run of play, home full-back Ed Yarnton came into the line, chipping ahead to follow up and touch down on 17 minutes.

Winger Simon Barber ran in for the first of a hat-trick and just before the break another unkind bounce on the grassless and hard surface avoided Otley hands and lock Keith Loughlin was left with an easy try.

It was Barber again before Otley rallied. The pack, with captain Jamie Sutton again in the sin-bin, drove Adam Blades over before Craig Hampson weaved his way through.

Ben Hough converted both tries but Blaydon replied through tries from prop Robbie Kalbraier and Barber.

After Joel Gill grabbed a third try for Otley, lock Chris Wearmouth scored Blaydon’s eighth try.
