Adams ready to pack a punch in pursuit of London 2012 glory

NICOLA ADAMS, one of Yorkshire’s genuine medal hopefuls at next summer’s Olympics, is urging people to register for tickets to the biggest show on earth before it is too late.

Ticket registration for London 2012 closes at 11.59pm on April 26 after a six-week period in which time people have been given the chance to apply for a seat at the event of their choice. Leeds-born Adams, 28, is a medal candidate in women’s boxing, a discipline that makes its competitive debut in the Olympics after years of fighting to gain an equal footing with their male counterparts.

Boxing at the last three Olympics has been the starting point for household names like Audley Harrison, Amir Khan and James Degale and although the women’s version might not be to the taste of some sports fans, Adams is confident she and her fellow boxers can pack a winning punch next summer.

“It’s amazing to think we have an Olympics on our doorstep and just to be a part of that and repesenting Yorkshire is fantastic,” said Adams, who is part of the GB performance squad that trains at Sheffield’s English Institute of Sport.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me but also for fans to see the greatest sporting talent on the planet and I want to encourage everyone from Leeds and Yorkshire to be a part of the experience.

“A home Games in 2012 gives our country the chance to inspire future generations with a love of sport, whether they’re future Olympians or supporters.

“And to anyone not sure about women’s boxing, I would say come down and have a look, you’re going to be seeing the best boxers in the world. You never know, you might change your mind and like it.”

For Adams to meet those fans at the London Olympics, she needs to book her place in the draw for the women’s flyweight class, first by performing well at the European Championships in Rotterdam in October, and then at the World Championships in China next March, which counts double as the Olympic qualifier.

“Hopefully, I’ll get a gold at the Europeans to get the ranking points to get an easier draw for the Olympic qualifier,” said the double world silver medallist, who overcame a year-long injury to reach last year’s global final.
