Coyle insists clash has come too early for Hull’s golden boy Campbell

The pair have been on a collision course since Campbell turned professional after winning his Olympic gold medal back in 2012 and finally meet in the ring tonight as they top the Rumble on the Humber card.

Most are tipping Campbell to move to his 12th successive win in the pro ranks, but Coyle believes the fight has come too soon for the 25-year-old and is confident of winning by stoppage.

Coyle said: “I’m confident it’ll be a successful and victorious night. This fight has come too early for him.

“I can’t see it going the distance. I’ve got everything to gain and nothing to lose.

“I’m looking forward to it now, I will go in and put everything on the line like I always do.”

Coyle has been the more vocal of the two in the build up to the fight, and he did most of the talking at the final press conference on Thursday.

He added: “The build up has been good, I’ve enjoyed every second of it.

“I have a different aura about me for this fight, I’m very confident whereas I’m usually nervous.

“It’s finally here, there’s no pressure on me, no nerves, and that’ll bring the best out of me.

“Michael Buffer (MC) is coming to Hull and it’s great that I’m going to be a part of something that we can all look back on.

“It’s a dream come true.”

Campbell’s outlook for the fight is almost a polar opposite to Coyle’s, the Hessle man insisting his approach to tonight’s fight will be the same as any other.

The 25-year-old southpaw spent a chunk of his camp sparring with Cuban legend Guillermo Rigondeaux in Miami, and it’s the likes of the two-time Olympic champion that the Hull man is looking to prove he can mix it with by making a big statement against Coyle tonight.

Campbell said: “This is a one-off (for Hull) and I am excited to be a part of it.

“I take each fight as any other, I prepare as best I can and the fans will be in for a treat from this one.

“This fight will be about going out there and showing everybody just how good I am.

“All the talking is done - It’s showtime now.

“I’m excited and confident, ready to go out and put a good show on.”

Hall of Fame MC Buffer will be announcing the fight tonight, and promoter Eddie Hearn insists this will be a once-in-a-lifetime sporting event for the City of Hull.

Hearn said: “This is the biggest boxing event Hull will ever see.

“We’ve sold 13,000 tickets and we’re hoping to reach the 15,000 mark come fight night.

“There are some career-defining moments for some of the fighters on the bill.

“The whole of the country will be watching and the the city will be watching with baited breath.

“The city of Hull should be very proud of these two fighters. They do more for the local community in Hull than any of the fighters that I work with.”

Of those fighters in Hearn’s Matchroom stable, Blackpool’s Brian Rose and Scotsman Ricky Burns join Campbell and Coyle on a stacked card that gets under way at 5.10pm with Scarborough welterweight George Rhodes Jnr taking on Paul O’Brien in his second professional outing.

Rose’s career is on the line as he looks for revenge against American Carson Jones, who controversially stopped the Blackpool man in the first round in their last outing, while Burns is also looking to get his career back on track against Prince Ofotsu of Ghana.

Three more Hull fighters are part of the 13-fight card, and Driffield’s Danny Little closes the show after the main event.

Middleweight Connor Seymour meets Norwich’s Duane Green in a six-round contest, light welterweight Carl Chadwick faces a four-round battle with Kristian Laight and heavyweight Ryan Fuller is in action against Hungarian Martin Szatmari looking to follow up on his impressive first-round knockout win on debut against James Barnes back in March.

Also on the bill are Martin J Ward and Darlington’s Stuart Hall.
