London 2012: Campbell clinches Olympic title

LUKE Campbell won a thrilling Olympic final last night against Ireland’s John Joe Nevin to clinch gold.

The 24-year-old, from Hull, took gold in a compelling 14-11 victory over Ireland’s John Joe Nevin at ExCeL last night, pulling off his best performance of the competition.

Speaking of his own success last night,

Campbell said he was “on his game” and was able to force Nevin to change his game plan.

He added: “I’m overwhelmed from it all, it seems a bit of a blur. It’s everything I’ve ever worked for. I’ve achieved my goal, I’m speechless.

“It’s a moment I’ve dreamed about most of my life, daydreamed about, visualised. All the hard work and dedication was all for the Olympic Games, and to achieve a gold medal at the Olympic Games is fantastic, the best of the best.

“The support I’ve had is just fantastic, from Great Britain and from my home town Hull - there is brilliant support there. I’m so, so happy.”

Fred Evans and Joshua Anthony both fight for gold this afternoon in some of the final action of the Games, and Campbell reckons they can ensure the Olympics end on a high for Team GB.

“Fred Evans, very talented. Joshua, a big guy, he’s come on leaps and bounds in a short space of time,” he told BBC Breakfast.

“I’m very confident we can do the same again today and get two gold medals.”
