Bronze proves silver lining for Drinkhall

PAUL DRINKHALL claimed his second Commonwealth Games table tennis medal in Delhi yesterday but admitted his bronze was a bittersweet victory after bowing out of the singles competition.

Drinkhall linked up with his off-table partner Jo Parker to get on the podium in the mixed doubles – seeing off Australian duo William Henzell and Miao Miao.

But while delighted with that medal, Drinkhall's quarter-final defeat in the singles competition at the hands of Yang Zi troubled him.

"I am only 20 and so to have a couple of Commonwealth Games medals is a great achievement but defeat in the singles was disappointing."

Sheffield squash player Nick Matthews is on the verge of adding doubles gold to his singles title after joining forces with Adrian Grant to defeat Australian duo Ryan Cuskelly and Cameron Pilley.

"The doubles have been hard for me mentally but Adrian has been buzzing so I fed off his energy," said Matthews who is in line to emulate Peter Nicol's achievement in 2006. "Pete did the double four years ago and that's an inspiration to me."
