Brown is off and running as a trainer

Frederick Engels landed a gamble to provide South Yorkshire trainer David Brown with his first winner at the Royal meeting in the Windsor Castle Stakes.

Ridden by Johnny Murtagh, the well-backed 9-4 favourite quickened impressively to prevail from Stonefield Flyer from the yard of first-season trainer Keith Dalgleish.

Maltby-based Brown said: “I’ve had a lot of good horses as an owner and then I started training when I retired three or four years ago.

“We have a great training facility – if you couldn’t train horses there you couldn’t train them anywhere.

“There are just four staff and me. All the lads were up at 4am to do all the rest of the work.”

Robert Cowell’s sprinter Prohibit beat off a truly international field to land the King’s Stand Stakes.
