Buck survives collision to take indoor medal in Sheffield

CITY OF YORK'S Richard Buck won the 400m at the Aviva UK Indoor Championships at Sheffield yesterday.

Buck, fastest in the rounds, was clear favourite although Nigel Levine (Windsor) almost caused an upset when colliding with Buck at the break.

Luckily both were able to continue with Buck using the final 30 metres to secure the win in 47.54 ahead of Levine in 47.73.

Afterwards, Buck was magnanimous over the collision.

"That was messy and far from my best," he said. "I thought I had the break but Levine was like a rocket, he came out from nowhere – he was trying to get the inside line and I didn't want to give it up. He wasn't going to bail on it and neither was I, so we had to have a bit of a scrap in there.

"I couldn't have asked for a better result, slightly disappointed with the time but I'm sure that's down to what happened in the race and I hope to get better in Birmingham next week."

Middlesborough's Chris Tomlinson was beaten in the long jump by Greg Rutherford. A modest 7.75 by Tomlinson left him 19cm adrift.

Luke Cutts (Dearnside), who had expected to challenge Steve Lewis for the title, had to settle for third in the pole vault, Andrew Sutcliffe (Sale) excelled to finish behind Lewis with Cutts, who cleared 5.36, pushed into the bronze medal position.

There was also a bronze medal for City of Sheffield's Jamie Williamson in the shot. The Sheffield man improved throughout snatching third with his final effort of 16.85.
