Carberry to reprise ride on Character

NINA Carberry will once again take the ride on the Yorkshire-trained Character Building in next week’s John Smith’s Grand National as she attempts to become the first woman jockey to win the race.

John Quinn’s 11-year-old was a leading fancy a year ago when finishing seventh to Don’t Push It after a change of ownership a week prior to the race saw Carberry come in for the ride ahead of Dougie Costello.

However, the grey runs off a 5lb lower mark this time around and Quinn believes his charge can improve on that initial effort over the 30 massive fences.

“He’s in good form and we’re very happy with him,” said Malton-based Quinn. “Nina Carberry rides him again and hopefully he’ll run a good race.”

Jason Maguire has urged punters not to lose faith with one-time ante-post National favourite Ballabriggs who was beaten at Kelso on his last outing.

“It was a stepping stone to Aintree and he looks great,” said Maguire, who believes Champion Hurdle runner-up Peddlers Cross will be better suited by a longer trip at the Merseyside track next week.
