Carty, still classified as an amateur, produced some impressive snooker to be level at 3-3 with Martin Gould before the world No 26 pulled away to win 5-3 at the Tempodrom.

Despite the loss, the Thurcroft potter, who beat world No 15 Robert Milkins and James Cahill to qualify for the event, believes there are plenty of positives to be taken.

“I’m pleased with my performance,” he said. “I gave Martin a good game.

“There were a few frames I should have won that I’ve lost, but I’m happy with this tournament overall.

“I’m still classed as an amateur and I’ve qualified for the last 32 of a ranking event, so I’ve got to be happy and proud of my achievement.”

Carty’s attention will soon be turning to Q-School, where he can earn a two-year card to the World Snooker tour.

After falling at the final hurdle by losing to Michael Georgiou when attempting to turn professional last year, the 19-year-old is desperate to go one better this time around.

“I was gutted when I lost in Q-School last year, so it’s made me work harder – I don’t want to go through that again,” he said.
