Clean sweep for Yorkshire trio

CYCLING: Yorkshire riders from Team Swift dominated the podium in the Yorkshire Cycling Federation’s 10-mile time trial in West Yorkshire yesterday, with Simon Beldon taking the win and leading a 1-2-3 for the team.

The 44-year-old, from Leeds, clocked 21:50 for the course at Byram which used parts of the old A1, while just four seconds slower was another Leeds rider, Andy Jackson.

The podium was completed by a third Team Swift rider, Joel Wainman, the 39-year-old from Hessle clocking 21:55.

In road racing, Leeds rider Tom Barras (Wheelbase-Altura) was judged edged off the podium in the Clayton Velo Spring Classic Handicap in Lancashire yesterday.

The 35-year-old had been in an early break as the riders ploughed round the 54-mile course near Edisford, but once team-mate Simon Wilson had joined the group and then attacked, he sat in the bunch and helped ensure his team-mate took the win.

There were lean pickings for Yorkshire riders in the North East Trophy at the Croft motor racing circuit in North Yorkshire on Saturday.

Peterborough’s Steve Lampier took the win ahead of Manchester’s Alistair Rutherford (Wheelbase-Altura), with Scotland’s Jack Barrett (The Racers) third. Best placed Yorkshire rider was Ben Hallworth (Ilkley CC) who took seventh, while Whitby’s William Brown (Achieve) was ninth.
