Cold conditions fail to halt impressive Bees

Bradford & Bingley secured a comfortable 21-10 victory in near-freezing conditions at home to Kendal.

But they had to do it the hard way after falling 10-0 behind to early tries from Garry Holmes and Daniel Lowther.

Captain Guy Ford led the fightback when he ploughed over the line and, after Matt Robinson’s effort was ruled out for his foot being in touch, the Bees moved to within three points with a penalty from Richard Scull.

It wasn’t until just before the hour mark, however, that the home side were able to make their pressure pay when Scull slotted a second penalty.

Ford then grabbed himself a second try in the 64th minute before a neat move involving Richard Tafa and Chris Fisher worked an opening for James Morton to power over four minutes later.

Sandal ran in five tries to take maximum points from a 33-10 victory at West Hartlepool.

The visitors drew first blood when Greg Wood darted in to score, the fly-half converting his own try.

Hartlepool levelled after charging down a Sandal kick to break clear before winger Alex Orr put Sandal ahead once more, Wood converting. The hosts added a penalty before the interval, but Sandal romped to victory after dominating the second half.

Hooker Jamie Heron made it 19-10 before Simon Frewin raced 40 metres to extend the advantage to 16 points. The centre then wrapped-up the scoring only minutes later when he raced in at the corner.

Harrogate cruised to a comfortable 29-13 victory at Waterloo.

Noel Minikin went over to give the visitors an early lead before Liam Reeve’s penalty reduced the deficit.

Further tries followed for Harrogate from Aarin Yorke and Kyle Dench, although they were pegged back again by Alex Reed’s converted effort for Waterloo.

Reeve brought the home side to within four with a second-half penalty, but a well-worked effort from Sam Bottomley and a second for Minikin ensured Harrogate were in position to earn a welcome bonus point.
