Broad brilliance sends a message to England selectors

Stuart Broad’s burst with the second new ball brought an end to Derbyshire’s resistance on the final day of their LV= County Championship Division One match against Nottinghamshire at the County Ground.

Four wickets in 17 balls from the England all-rounder sent Derbyshire tumbling to 229 all out in their second innings and set Notts the simple task of completing a nine-wicket victory at 43 for one.

Broad finished with four for 34 for the innings and eight for 91 in the match to the selectors a timely reminder of his talents ahead of next month’s Test series against New Zealand.

Notts were delayed only by sixth-wicket pair Dan Redfern and David Wainwright, who wiped out the remainder of Derbyshire’s first innings deficit in taking their stand to 79, and afternoon rain but neither could deny them a first Championship win of the season to help erase the memory of their heavy defeat to Middlesex in the opening round of County matches.

Derbyshire, who have now lost two out of three on their return to the top flight, began the day still trailing by 44 but fears of an innings defeat were eased by Redfern and Wainwright, who batted with reasonable comfort against the old ball.

Redfern completed his first half-century of the season off 114 balls with eight fours as the pair put their side back in the black but, with the second new ball due, a shower interrupted their flow.

When the sides returned 20 minutes later, Broad had the new ball in his hand and his first delivery with it was full, hitting Redfern on the pads and ending his innings for 61 with the score 218 for six.

That was just the breakthrough Nottinghamshire needed and, in his next over, Broad removed the other major obstacle in their way when former Yorkshire spinner Wainwright tried to fend off a rising ball and succeeded only in looping a catch to wicketkeeper Chris Read. He scored 33.

With his next ball, Broad delivered a further blow when he had Tom Poynton lbw to make it 223 for eight.

Shell-shocked Derbyshire were grateful to survive the remaining few balls to lunch and the rain that came shortly after looked their best hope of avoiding defeat – but it was not to be.

Broad was back after a delay of more than two hours to hit Tony Palladino full on the boot with his fifth ball and make it 227 for nine. Harry Gurney finished Derbyshire off by bowling Jon Clare.

Though Alex Hales was caught behind in the first over, Ed Cowan (15 not out) and Michael Lumb (24 not out) rounded off the win in 5.4 overs.

Monty Panesar took the wicket of South Africa captain Graeme Smith as Surrey and Sussex drew their game at The Oval.

Smith made a fluent 67 before chopping a Panesar delivery onto his stumps.
