Century-maker Latif cuts loose as Ossett rise

OPENERS Shoaib Latif and Gurman Randhawa put on 186 as Ossett climbed to third in the Premiership by inflicting former leaders Scholes’ third successive league defeat.

Latif hammered an unbeaten 121 off 135 balls and Randhawa struck 76 as Ossett piled up 
245-3. Randhawa claimed 3-37 as Scholes were bowled out for 134 in reply.

Methley increased their lead to nine points by crushing bottom team Hunslet Nelson, who were routed for 70 by Sohail Raz (7-37).

Wakefield Thornes and defending champions Townville maintained their challenges.

Johannes Bothma hit a half-century as Thornes beat Altofts by 55 runs in a 33-over match and all-rounder Jack Hughes (48 and 4-24) shone in Townville’s six-wicket victory against Hopton Mills, who collapsed from 67-1 to 119 all out.

Carlton eased their relegation worries when Simon Danby (57) and Chris Leaf (38 and 3-24) led them to a 42-run win at Wrenthorpe but Birstall remain in trouble after losing to Mirfield Parish Cavaliers.

Muhammed Shahnawaz (6-36) and Nazar Hussain (4-26) skittled Birstall for 68, replying to Cavaliers’ 176-9 that included 44 by Terence James.

Opener Richard Atkinson’s unbeaten half-century was in vain for strugglers Wakefield St Michael’s in a four-wicket defeat against Championship leaders Batley in a 28-over game.

Christian Silkstone struck 71 and Dewsbury Rams rugby league coach Glenn Morrison smashed three sixes and seven fours in a rapid 62 as second-placed Northowram Fields won by 97 runs at East Leeds, for whom Kirti Tandel (40 and 4-64) shone.

Liversedge’s promotion bid was dented by a seven-wicket defeat against Buttershaw St Paul’s.
