Coaching career awaits as Taylor calls it a day

YORKSHIRE batsman Chris Taylor has retired from professional cricket at the age of 28.

Taylor has called time on his career after failing to hold down a regular first-team place at Headingley Carnegie.

A tall and resolute opener, Taylor played just four first-class games after rejoining Yorkshire in 2008 following two seasons at Derbyshire.

Taylor, who first played for Yorkshire from 2001-2005, will now focus on his Pro Coach Cricket Academy business with Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale, which provides coaching by Test and county cricketers for youngsters nationwide.

In a statement, Taylor said: "I have had 10 thoroughly enjoyable seasons as a professional cricketer with both Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

"Following my successful stint with Derbyshire I genuinely thought I could make a real impact back at Yorkshire.

"However, I have been somewhat disappointed not to have played more first-team cricket. That said, I do realise there are some very exciting young cricketers emerging at the club and, as such, it is unlikely I will get any first-team opportunities in 2010.

"The last thing I want is to block the development of talented young cricketers making their way in the game.

"I have therefore made the decision to focus on my cricket coaching business with Andrew Gale.

"I have a real passion to make a difference to youngsters learning the game around Yorkshire and am both pleased and honoured to have signed a joint venture agreement with the club's charity – The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation – to provide this service as Pro Coach Yorkshire Cricket Ltd.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody associated with the club – in particular, the supporters – and I wish the lads the very best of luck for the 2010 season."

Yorkshire's chief executive Stewart Regan commented: "Chris is a great guy and I am sorry that he has not had the breaks he needed to establish himself in our first team.

"I would like to thank him for his contribution over the last two years and wish him well in his new venture. I hope he continues to assist the club in whatever way he can.

"I look forward to him providing an invaluable private coaching resource for those children who are looking to improve their skills."
