Cricket latest: Bairstow double hundred puts Yorkshire in control

JONATHAN BAIRSTOW turned his maiden first-class hundred into a double hundred as Yorkshire dominated against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

He was 205 in Yorkshire’s 534-9 first innings score, Joe Root falling just short of his century when he was out for 95.

In reply, Notts had reached 43-0 when bad light stopped play in Nottingham.

Bairstow and former Nottinghamshire pace bowler Ryan Sidebottom batted throughout the afternoon session, emphasising the docile nature of the pitch.

Both played splendidly, however, in lifting their stand to 136, Sidebottom playing his part with an accomplished 38.

Bairstow gave a tough chance on 186 just before the interval when he was dropped off his own bowling by Ben Phillips.

The former Somerset player had to leave the field for treatment and his over was completed by Samit Patel.

Earlier, Bairstow had finally got to his landmark first ton in his 59th innings after previously registering 17 half-centuries.

But there was disappointment for Joe Root, who fell five runs short of his own maiden century.

It had been an intriguing morning, with Nottinghamshire fighting back after Yorkshire resumed on 291-3.

Root fell in the day’s sixth over, caught behind after following a delivery from Paul Franks.

Gerard Brophy was bowled for a third-ball duck by Luke Fletcher in the next over and Yorkshire slipped to 313-6 when Adil Rashid was caught at second slip by Neil Edwards off Franks.

When Rich Pyrah was caught behind off Franks for nine, Yorkshire were 331-7 and in danger of letting their hard work slip.

But Bairstow and Ajmal Shahzad stablised the innings with a stand of 52 in 14 overs, ended when Shahzad skied Samit Patel to Ben Phillips at mid-off.

At lunch, Bairstow was unbeaten on 106 and Sidebottom - given a generous hand on his return to Trent Bridge - yet to score but they then controlled the next session.
