Cricket latest: Yorkshire star Bairstow gets England call-up

YORKSHIRE’s Jonny Bairstow was today named in England’s 13-man squad to play Ireland in a one-day international in Dublin on Thursday, writes Chris Waters.

Bairstow, 21, has been chosen on the back of some impressive performances for Yorkshire and England Lions.

Bairstow’s inclusion makes it possible he will also be selected for the five-match ODI series against India (September 3-16) and the NatWest Twenty20 international against India (August 31).

The squads for those games will be announced next Saturday at 11.00am.

Bairstow’s call-up for the Ireland contest means he will miss the County Championship match against Warwickshire that starts at Headingley Carnegie on Tuesday.

He would miss the rest of Yorkshire’s Championship programme if he is picked for the ODI series.

Eoin Morgan will captain England in his native Ireland, with England deciding to rest a number of players involved in the current Test series - including Yorkshire’s Tim Bresnan.

The ODI squad includes three other players who have yet to make their international debut - Leicestershire’s James Taylor, plus Durham’s Ben Stokes and Scott Borthwick.

England National Selector Geoff Miller said: “The squad we’re looking to take to Ireland involves a number of exciting young England players as we rest several players currently involved in the npower Test series against India.

“By resting several players that have played international cricket since the start of the summer the opportunity has arisen for a number of talented up and coming players to continue their development on the international stage.

“We know from previous encounters that Ireland are a tough ODI outfit and we’ll be fielding a very strong England side that will need to play well.

“We’re also presented with the opportunity to provide Eoin Morgan with further leadership experience and I know he is very much looking forward to assuming the captaincy and developing his leadership credentials while in charge of a young England squad.”

Miller added that Jonathan Trott is making encouraging progress following a shoulder injury and will be available for selection for the Ireland match.

England assistant coach Richard Halsall will preside over the side, with team director Andy Flower having been given a rest by the England and Wales Cricket Board.
