Finn still made to toil after avoiding boot camp

Steven Finn revealed how he swapped an "army boot camp" for an important role in England's first Test against Bangladesh.

Finn was called into the squad as cover when England's bowlers suffered a number of injuries, and was a surprise inclusion in Chittagong as the tourists opted against a second spinner on a flat, dusty track.

The 20-year-old took one wicket in the first innings and closed on 1-31 from 11 overs in the second yesterday as a gutsy stand between Junaid Siddique and Mushfiqur Rahim saw Bangladesh to 191-5 and denied England an early finish.

The conditions in Chittagong are hardly those to make a young paceman's eyes light up, but, for Finn, it is much preferable to the alternative.

"By no means 10 days ago when I was lying in bed in my flat did I think I would be playing Test match cricket now," said the 6ft 8in bowler.

"In fact, as we speak, I would probably have been getting woken up by an army officer in Exeter.

"At Middlesex, we had an army boot camp planned. Angus (Fraser, director of cricket) said 'Last year the team went to Dubai and didn't do very well so you're going to boot camp this year'. I'd be in the middle of a forest in a tent by now probably."

Finn added: "This is a fantastic opportunity for me. Since I was just a little kid this is something that I've aimed towards.

"Fundamentally, every young lad who plays cricket wants to play Test matches. By no means had I built up a picture in my mind that it was going to be easy and bowling on the flat track out there proved that."

Junaed was the main thorn in England's side. He survived unscathed on 68 after 199 balls. "This was the first time I have faced so many balls in a Test match," he said. "I was committed within myself and I tried to battle using my strengths."

Having set their opponents a mammoth 513-run chase, England had Bangladesh five down at tea and sensed an early finish to proceedings.

But Junaed and Mushfiqur Rahim (47no) held firm as the tourists toiled for two luckless hours without success in the evening session.

Bangladesh reached the close on 191-5 on a pitch that now looks placid.

England's first objective in the morning was to add some quick runs but Matt Prior managed only one clean hit before skying a catch off Shakib Al Hasan.

That brought Ian Bell and the promoted Graeme Swann together and the scoreboard soon began to get a workout.

Bell hit four boundaries before smashing Abdur Razzak for a glorious straight six, with Swann chipping in with three fours in a breezy cameo worth 32 before Alastair Cook declared at 209-7.

Despite hints of variable bounce Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes looked calm against the seamers, so Swann was quickly introduced and he bowled Tamim in his second over, turning it past the batsman's outside edge and clipping off stump.

Imrul followed for 23 three balls before lunch, nicking Finn to wicketkeeper Prior to make it 45-2 at the break.

After a 54-run stand, Yorkshire's Tim Bresnan snared Aftab on the drive, with Prior accepting a simple catch. Mahmudullah came and went for five when Bresnan located just enough sideways movement to sneak between bat and bad and shatter the stumps.

By now England's momentum was tangible and home captain Shakib could not halt it.

Instead, he fell lbw sweeping Swann on five, though there was a hint of glove on the way through.

Mushfiqur, scorer of a measured 79 in the first innings, was Junaid's new partner at 110-5 and between them they dampened any expectation of a swift finish.

Yorkshire director of cricket Martyn Moxon admits that he is unsure if Ryan Harris will be available to Yorkshire for the whole of the 2010 season.

The Australian all-rounder has signed to become the Tykes' overseas player, but his form this winter means that he may now be needed by his national side.

It will depend whether Harris is on the Aussies' short tour to England in June.

"The way things are he probably won't be available to us for the whole summer," Moxon said.

"Until Cricket Australia give us an indication on his availability it's just pure speculation."
