Fourth-wicket partnership breaks 52-year record in Town’s run blitz

CENTURY-makers Jordan Lowe and Simon Guy broke a fourth-wicket league record partnership that had stood for 52 years, as Rotherham Town scorched to victory by 321 runs in the blazing sunshine at Hull.

The pair, who put on 253 runs, broke the previous record of 228 unbroken, set by J B Bethel and G T Summers for Sheffield United against Harrogate in 1960.

Batting first, Rotherham amassed a massive 399-4 in their 55 overs, Lowe flaying 14 fours and eight sixes in a magnificent innings of 130 off 93 balls.

Guy was left undefeated, having made 107 off 99 balls, accumulating 14 boundaries in the process. Opener James Moorehouse played his part with 66, he and Simon’s brother Stuart Guy putting on 109 for the second wicket. In reply, Hull were bowled out for 78 in 27.5 overs, seamer Nathan Smith taking 4-13 in 5.5 overs.

After a bright start to the season, Cleethorpes fell to a third successive defeat in league and cup competition as leaders Harrogate overcame them by seven wickets at Chichester Road. Alex Osmond, batting at four, top-scored for Cleethorpes with 74, including 10 fours and a six, but David Orange and Vic Craven had half-centuries for Harrogate, Orange and Alexis Twigg sharing an opening stand worth 66.

Sheffield Collegiate gained their first win of the season – by 33 runs at Doncaster Town.

Joe Root was run out seven short of his century as Collegiate totalled 213-5. Doncaster recovered from 94-7 to 180 all out, No 9 batsman Jonathon Redfern making a defiant 59.

Reigning champions York, beaten three times by Yorkshire Academy last season, finally gained their revenge with a nine-wicket triumph at Clifton Park.

The Academy recovered from 71-5 to total 179-9, leg-spinner Tom Pringle taking 6-72 in 23 overs.

York’s batting heroes were Liam McKendry and Oliver Hairs who carried their bats for 76 and 74, respectively, and their partnership was worth 119.

Castleford opener Chris Ward made 112 but his side lost by six wickets to visitors Scarborough, for whom Andy Simpson and Darren Harland contributed half-centuries.

Aamer Sajjad struck his third century of the season for Driffield Town who defeated visitors Sheffield United by 63 runs. Sam Drury hit 74 and took two wickets for 27 runs off seven overs.

Barnsley won by 57 runs at Appleby Frodingham, Jonathan Trower hitting 10 boundaries in his 92 and Ryan Hercules taking 5-55.
