JASON GILLESPIE last night hailed what the Yorkshire head coach considered to be a near-perfect performance from his players at Edgbaston.

Without not only their three England players on Test duty at Headingley but also Tim Bresnan (elbow) and Adil Rashid (paternity leave), the White Rose county produced a fine all-round display to out-class Warwickshire.

Gillespie said: “I am incredibly happy. Everything about our performance was good. We were positive with the bat, didn’t let the Warwickshire bowlers settle and our bowlers were ruthless. We wanted our bowlers to pitch the ball up and get wickets, which is exactly what they did.

“The majority of our dismissals were Warwickshire playing shots off the front foot. We stuck to the plan and we got the win.”

Yesterday’s triumph was achieved with 26 overs of the third day remaining, with Warwickshire coach Dougie Brown later tipping Andrew Gale’s side as title favourites.

Gillespie added: “You are always seeking that perfect performance. And this has to be up there. Guys are coming in and getting the job done. it was a real team performance. Aaron (Finch) got his hundred, which was great. But so many others contributed.”
