Headingley latest: Yorkshire set testing total in Roses match

YORKSHIRE need 284 to win their County Championship match against Lancashire at Headingley Carnegie, writes Chris Waters.

The home side bowled out the visitors for 194 in their second innings, Kyle Hogg (52) and Saj Mahmood (50) lifting Lancashire from 87-8 with a ninth-wicket stand of 80.

Tim Bresnan took 4-50 for Yorkshire, who are chasing their second successive Championship victory.

But bad light has forced an early tea on day three, denying Yorkshire the chance to commence their chase.

Resuming on 96-8 after lunch, Mahmood and Hogg evoked Rich Pyrah and Ryan Sidebottom’s century stand for the ninth wicket on the second day as they set about the Yorkshire bowling.

Mahmood was the main aggressor, striking four consecutive fours off Sidebottom on his way to a half-century from 48 balls.

It took the introduction of Adil Rashid to make the breakthrough, the leg-spinner bowling Mahmood with his fifth delivery as the batsman swung wildly across the line.

The innings ended when Gary Keedy drove a ball from Joe Root to short extra-cover, where Bresnan swooped to run-out Hogg as he made his way to the danger end.
