Interesting final day spoiled by weather

All six games in the top flight were abandoned with three of the fixtures, New Farnley v East Bierley, Hanging Heaton v Pudsey St Lawrence and Morley v Lightcliffe having no play at all.

It meant that what looked like being an interesting last-day battle to settle third place between Hanging Heaton, Bradford & Bingley, New Farnley and Pudsey St Lawrence became a damp squib.

Bradford & Bingley were the only one of the quartet to see any action, 16 overs of quite frenetic play at Moorend against champions Cleckheaton.

Bradford & Bingley picked up three bowling points after reducing their rivals to 137-7, but that was not enough to snatch third place away from Hanging Heaton and had to settle for fourth place.

Left-arm spinner Noman Ali took 4-18 and that helped Bradford & Bingley’s overseas player to finish top of the Division One bowling averages with 45 wickets at 10.52. Cleckheaton’s leg spinner Tanzeel Altaf was the leading wicket taker with 57.

Pudsey St Lawrence’s opener Mark Robertshaw was top of the batting with an average of 55.07 after scoring 771 runs. Former Yorkshire player Gary Fellows, captain of Hanging Heaton, was the leading runscorer with 885.

One of the Bradford League’s most successful cricketers of recent times brought down the curtain on his playing career. Left-arm spinner Glenn Roberts, who has won 17 trophies with Pudsey Congs in 14 seasons, did not get to bowl in his last game as play was abandoned.

Roberts will be back on the field next season, albeit in the capacity of umpire.
