Lumb last-ball hero as shadow squad surprise England

Craig Kieswetter made the strongest case yet for promotion to England's senior side as his confident 81 led the Lions to a five-wicket win over Andy Flower's first XI in a Twenty20 warm-up in Abu Dhabi.

South Africa-born wicketkeeper Kieswetter, on his first day as an England-qualified player, continued his impressive form on tour with a boundary-strewn 62-ball knock as Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale's shadow side chased down 158 to win on the final ball.

Former Yorkshire batsman Michael Lumb hit successive boundaries at the death to secure the result after Yorkshire leg-spinner Adil Rashid, left out of the full squad after a disappointing time in South Africa, took 3-22 in the first innings.

Stuart Broad gave Kieswetter a life on four, misreading a simple skier at mid-off to deny Ryan Sidebottom the breakthrough.

Lumb bore the brunt of the early scoring, launching Yorkshire seam bowler Tim Bresnan for his second six in the fifth over.

Kieswetter joined in with a maximum off Luke Wright, equalling the number of sixes in the England innings after only seven of the reply.

By the time 10 overs had gone, the Lions were in control on 81 without loss.

Lumb had made 40 when he retired, led from the pitch clutching his face after being struck on the helmet by seam bowler Broad.

Kieswetter pressed on past 50 but Gale (two), Ian Bell (one) and Michael Carberry (eight) all failed to stick with him as the first XI hit back, leaving Lumb to return to the crease.

Despite the pain, he drilled his first ball back for four and Kieswetter followed with successive boundaries off Bresnan.

He fell just before the end, leaving 14 to win off the final over – a target Lumb saw them to with aplomb.

England started poorly after winning the toss, Joe Denly departing meekly in the first over caught by Chris Woakes off Steven Finn.

Opening partner Jonathan Trott started slowly but appeared to find his feet before top-edging Steve Kirby behind for 24.

Rashid removed Paul Collingwood for one in his second over, the captain lofting into the off side to Woakes.

At the halfway stage, England were 55-3.

Kevin Pietersen looked to break the shackles by hitting Rashid back over his head for four but moments later he mistimed a lofted drive to hand Woakes a third catch in the deep.

Rashid also trapped Eoin Morgan lbw two balls later to leave England 68-5.

Matt Prior went on to 33 and Luke Wright's aggressive hitting helped England to 45 off the final three overs.
