Lyth and Pyrah shine

YORKSHIRE lead by 70 runs with five wickets in hand at the end of day one of their County Championship game against Nottinghamshire at Headingley Carnegie.

After bowling out the visitors for 143, Yorkshire are 213-5 at stumps with captain Andrew Gale (47no) and England star Adil Rashid (39no) having formed a healthy sixth wicket partnership.

Earlier, Adam Lyth (64) and Anthony McGrath (49) put on a century second wicket stand as Martyn Moxon’s side took firm control against the champions, overcoming Joe Root’s golden duck with the total on six.

Nottinghamshire did not bowl anywhere near as well as Yorkshire - who saw Richard Pyrah do the damage earlier in the day with a career-best 5-58 - serving up too many half-volleys which Lyth and McGrath dispatched with aplomb.

Lyth went to his half-century from 79 balls with eight fours and Gale and Rashid are looking similarly fluid.

The home side finished off Nottinghamshire just 30 minutes after lunch after the visitors resumed on 100-6 following the break.

Pyrah struck with the second ball of the afternoon session when he had Steven Mullaney caught behind for 15. Mullaney fended at a ball outside off-stump he did not need to play.

Nottinghamshire fell to 124-8 when Andre Adams was bowled by Pyrah for eight, attempting to launch the Yorkshire all-rounder over mid-wicket.

After Ryan Sidebottom picked up his fourth wicket when he had Luke Fletcher well caught by Lyth in the gully for four, Pyrah rounded off the innings by having Alex Hales caught by Gerard Brophy at deep mid-wicket.

Hales’s 85, made from 89 balls with ten fours and two sixes, was the only innings of note.

Jonny Bairstow (3) and Gerard Brophy (4) fell victim to Luke Fletcher (3-55) as Yorkshire’s middle order stumbled but Gale and Rashid steadied.

Yorkshire: Lyth, Root, McGrath, Gale (captain), Bairstow, Brophy, Rashid, Pyrah, Sidebottom, Wainwright, Hannon-Dalby.
