Mason makes mark before Brice spins in

BRADFORDFormer York batsman Simon Mason hit an unbeaten 163 as Woodlands defeated Gomersal by 18 runs to take over at the top of Division One.

Mason’s first Bradford League century came off 123 balls and was laced with nine sixes and 20 fours as he and former Yorkshire opener Scott Richardson (66) powered their side to 315-5.

Left-arm spinner Chris Brice (6-26) then sent Gomersal spinning to 133 all out.

Woodlands are 10 points ahead of Farsley, who lost top spot after a 63-run defeat to Manningham Mills.

Mills’ overseas player Imran Khalid made 89 and Masood Ahmed 69 in a total of 284-6, then Farsley were dismissed for 221 despite 62 from Jamaican Lorenzo Ingram, whose aggregate is 775.

Pudsey St Lawrence halted their slide with a four-wicket win over third-placed Bradford & Bingley. Off-spinner Steve Watts took 6-48 as Bradford & Bingley lost eight wickets for 51 runs to finish on 191-9 after a second-wicket stand of 140 between Naweed Ghany (79) and Scott Etherington (60). David Stiff hit five sixes in a rapid 62 as St Lawrence eased home.

Former Yorkshire leg-spinner Mark Lawson made 140 as Hanging Heaton collected maximum points for a 27-run win over Undercliffe. Lawson shared a second-wicket stand of 155 with Joe Fraser (57) and James Stansfield (47no) swelled the total to 291-4.

Zarak Khan (85) and Ben Heritage (57) battled hard but Undercliffe were bowled out for 262 with John Carruthers taking 5-72.

Champions Pudsey Congs cmlaimed a one-wicket win at Baildon thanks to an unbroken last-wicket stand of 38 between Alex Hewitt (21no) and Muhammad Naved (18no) as they edged past the modest total of 156.

Until Hewitt and Naved’s heroics, Baildon had looked set for victory as spinner Mushtaq Ahmed took 3-24 in 15 overs to back up the work of seamers Craig Hitchenor (3-50) and Richard Atkins (3-51). Baildon failed to capitalise on an opening stand of 92 between Johnny Reynolds (54) and Simon Webb (32). Off-spinner Edward Walmsley (5-33) and paceman Naved (3-30) did the damage.

SOUTH YORKSHIRE

The Premier Division provided three top all-rounders in Hallam’s Humphrey Emery, Whiston’s Scott Jones and Treeton’s Steve Foster.

Emery’s five-wicket haul helped shoot out Aston Hall for 140, after opener Emery had struck 77 in Hallam’s 161-9.

Foster claimed 4-62 as Wath set a target of 253-8, with Andrew Wood hitting 100 and former Elsecar star Lesroy Weekes 70.

Foster, rated the top all-rounder in the League, smashed 116 as Treeton replied with 257-4, Umaid Asif hitting an unbeaten 76.

Jones picked up five cheap wickets as Houghton Main closed on 189, opener Lachie McKenna striking 66, and then opened the Whiston innings with an unbeaten 72. Opening partner Andy Tomlinson made 57 in the eight-wicket triumph.

When champions Whitley Hall travelled to bottom club Bradfield, the result was predictable, the hosts pegged to 143-8, Jaco Castle claiming 6-43, before Whitley replied with 146-3, opener Alex Welsh setting the visitors off to a good start with a knock of 76.

Elsecar quick bowler Chathura Athukorala, who was the top wicket-taker in the League last season with 50 victims, grabbed 8-50 to see off Rockingham for 149, and set up a six-wicket victory for the Armroyd Lane men, the consistent Brett Hunsley making 76.

Wickersley were also eight-wicket winners after sending back Barnsley for 184, junior Ben O’Brien hitting a fine 85 for the visitors. The Northfield Lane men struck back with an unbeaten 76 from James Barnard and 48 from Shaajhan Younis.

The highest aggregate of the day was at Kexborough, where the Division One side hammered the Tickhill attack for 375-5, Ross Diver belting 114, Richard Burgess 83 not out and Adam Wiles 78. Tickhill made a brave attempt which ended at 282-7, Ashley Fiddler 77 and teenager James Kilvington 69.

Doncaster Town junior Ryan Capstick was a century-maker in the eight-wicket win at Warmsworth in Division Two.

SOLLY CENTRAL YORKS

TOM Froggett and Matthew Varley shared an eighth-wicket stand of 124 as Wakefield Thornes maintained their Premier Division title bid with their seventh straight league win by beating Townville by two runs.

Froggett hit an unbeaten 75 and Varley struck 71 as Thornes recovered from 77-7 to close on 226-8.

Townville were all out for 224 off the penultimate ball when Liam Booth, attempting a winning hit, sent a return catch to Josh Shaw.

Khurram Chohan (69) and Tim Walton (52) led Townville’s scoring.

Methley regained top spot when champions Wrenthorpe failed to collect maximum points against bottom team Ossett.

Left-arm spinner Simon Purdy (6-60) toppled Mirfield Parish Cavaliers for 158, replying to Methley’s 243-5 that included an opening 91-run partnership between Nick Connolly (88) and Hamid Khan (56).

Methley are one point ahead of Wrenthorpe, who coasted to an eight-wicket win at Ossett but picked up only four points.

Captain Gary Fellows (94) and David Paynter (83no) put on 177 for the second-wicket as Wrenthorpe overhauled Ossett’s 189-8 in 25.1 overs.

An unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 27 between Dan Busfield (14no) and David McCallum (13no) steered New Farnley to a two-wicket victory against Hunslet Nelson. All-rounder Ian Fisher (61 and 3-42) was also an important contributor for New Farnley.

Northowram Fields eased their relegation worries with a two-wicket success at Birstall but Wakefield St Michael’s slipped deeper into trouble when they lost by three wickets to Altofts, for whom Alan Burton struck 73

Liversedge and Carlton remain level at the top of Division One. Liversedge had a 10-wicket win against Wakefield Thornes who fell from 44-0 to 111 all out by Stephen Lane (4-14), Will Atkin (3-29) and David Winter (2-16). Liversedge openers David Bolt (62no) and Max Power (41no) knocked off the runs in 13.5 overs.

Phil Page (91) and Thomas Taylor (53) shared a century stand as Carlton posted 262-7 at Oulton, who were routed for 117.
