The 26-year-old, who enhanced his chances of appearing at The Oval with a match-turning century against Durham at Scarborough last week, is in Australia’s limited-overs squad for the tour of England and Ireland.

Slow left-armer Ashton Agar, batsman Joe Burns and all-rounder Marcus Stoin are set to earn their first caps in the 50-over format.

New one-day captain Steve Smith will lead a much-overhauled side from the one that triumphantly won the World Cup on home soil earlier this year, with the injured Aaron Finch and suspended James Faulkner, following a drink-driving conviction, among the notable absentees.

Agar and Burns have each played two Tests, the former making his mark in the 2013 Ashes series with a wonderful 98 from 101 balls at No 11 on debut at Trent Bridge.

Agar claimed 5-39 for Australia A against India A earlier this week and Burns, who struck 154 off 131 balls against the same opposition in a different match, could partner David Warner at the top of the order.

Australia squad: S Smith, A Agar, G Bailey, Cameron Boyce (T20 only), J Burns, N Coulter-Nile, P Cummins, M Marsh, G Maxwell, J Pattinson, M, Starc, M Stoinis, M Wade, S Watson, D Warner.
