Nerves held as bowling duo deny Hampshire

Will Gidman and Ian Saxelby bowled Gloucestershire to a tense 33-run victory over Hampshire in Division Two of the County Championship.

Hampshire were set 290 to win, but were bowled out for 256 with only a handful of overs remaining.

Gidman took 4-66, while Saxelby did the early damage in a three-wicket burst at the top of the Hampshire order.

Gloucestershire were earlier bowled out for 179 in their second innings, with Ian Cockbain top-scoring on 47.

On Saturday, Jon Clare took match figures of 11-57 as Derbyshire wrapped up a 130-run victory over Glamorgan inside three days.

After being left 233 to win, Glamorgan slumped to 102 all out in their second innings in just 31.3 overs.

Clare followed up his 5-17 in the first innings, when Glamorgan were dismissed for just 95, with 6-40 in the second as the hosts lost their last eight wickets for just 16 runs in 51 balls.

Youngster Matt Coles took six wickets as Kent cruised to an innings victory against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.

The 21-year-old seamer took career-best figures of 6-51 as Northamptonshire were bowled out for 116 before lunch as the visitors won by an innings and 120 runs.

In Division One, Middlesex claimed Surrey’s last five wickets for 36 runs to secure a thrilling three-run win at Lord’s.

Resuming on 95-5, Surrey were unable to cope with the seam movement generated by Middlesex’s Tim Murtagh, Gareth Berg and Toby Roland-Jones and allowed the hosts to pick up the five wickets they needed, eventually being skittled out for 137.

Nottinghamshire were held up by some defiant tail-end batting by Durham before clinching their second win from two games by 114 runs.

Warwickshire survived a major scare before launching their campaign with a two-wicket win against Somerset at Edgbaston.
