ROUND-UP: Rashid century sees Skelmanthorpe win

Sykes Cup Final: Limping century-maker Qaiser Rashid defied a painful bout of cramp as Skelmanthorpe lifted the trophy for the second time in three years yesterday.

Rashid and Indian Test opener Wasim Jaffer had an unbroken partnership of 222 against Delph & Dobcross at Honley, Jaffer hitting the winning boundary off the penultimate ball.

Skelmanthorpe won the toss and put Delph in to bat, Craig Glover trapping openers Irfan Zahoor and Bruce Cruse lbw. After Faisal Butt was bowled by Josh Ingham, Bilal Khiljee and Arron Lilley added 34 runs for the fourth wicket.

They were parted when Lilley was run out for 19 with the score on 132 and incoming batsman John Morris fell lbw to Rashid without scoring.

Big-hitting Khiljee reached his 50 in the 41st over with a splendid sweep to the boundary and the 200 arrived at the end of the 46th over, with Khiljee and Norvall accelerating the run rate.

Khiljee was eventually caught behind by Josh Clarkson off James Crossland's bowling, having made 89 including 10 boundaries.

Norvall was left undefeated on 48 including three fours and three sixes with the partnership worth 104.

Chasing Delph's total of 239-6, Skelmanthorpe made a hesitant start, losing Sarfraz Ahmed and Tim Sykes cheaply but Jaffer and Rashid then launched their spectacular fight-back, Rashid hitting 15 boundaries and Jaffer 13.

Skelmanthorpe's victory ended Delph's hopes of making it third time lucky after final defeats in 2005 and 2008.

Rashid was named Man of the Match by adjudicator Ian Sutherland.

Yorkshire League Cup: The invincibles of York crushed Castleford to lift the cup for the fourth time in the last seven years.

Denied the double when Yorkshire Academy beat them in last year's final, York look certain to complete it this time as they are still unbeaten in the league for the second year in a row.

Chasing York's 300-9 total, Castleford slumped to 20-5 in just 12.1 overs. Alex Romaniw (21) and John Randerson (25no) halted to slide briefly, putting on 32 for the sixth wicket.

But once Romaniw went, Randerson ran out of partners, the last three falling to a hat-trick from Tom Pringle with Castleford still only on 58. As well as Pringle, Tom Bartram picked up three wickets with Liam Mckendry and Dan Woods taking two each.

It was all in stark contrast to the York innings which saw an opening stand of 66 between Dan Wilson (52) and Duncan Snell (35) and a fourth wicket partnership of 106 between Alex Collins (47) and man of the match Mckendry (75).

Both Collins and McKendry were dismissed by Chris Hoyle on his way to figures of 5-41 as York stumbled slightly, losing six wickets for the addition of only 23 runs.

But the final pair. Woods (30no) and former Yorkshire player Jim Love, finished the innings with a flourish, including smashing 23 off the final over from Chris Young to take the total to exactly 300.

Whitworth Cup Final: Whitley Hall have high hopes of taking the Ben Bailey South Yorkshire Senior League Premier Division title this season for the first time in their history, and landed the first leg of what could be a historic treble when beating rivals Treeton in the final of the League's KO competition, the Whitworth Cup, at Tickhill yesterday.

Whitley, who were retaining the trophy they won last season, are hot favourites for the Premier Division championship, and also hope for success in the Yorkshire Council play-offs.

Treeton were hoping to follow their four previous successful Cup Final appearances, but saw Whitley rattle up a formidable 275-6, Neil Longhurst blasting a century with 11 fours and 3 sixes, Andy Bethel adding 35 and South African Jaco Castle unbeaten on 43.

Danny Kemp picked up three wickets for Treeton, who were given a fine start by openers Steve Foster , 57, and Andy Tomlinson, 50, but who fell at 244, their wickets shared by Alex Welsh and Adam Wilson.

Whitley now face some of the less powerful teams in their last six matches of the season, to land that elusive first title, and hope to avoid Wrenthorpe in the Yorkshire Council play-offs.
