Six of the best for Yorkshire CCC stars awarded new deals by England

SIX Yorkshire players have been awarded new contracts by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Adil Rashid are one of 18 awarded central contracts for the coming year.

Harry Brook and Dawid Malan have been awarded increment deals, and Matthew Fisher a pace bowling development contract.

The Yorkshire six are contracted for a 12-month period from the start of this month.

Alex Lees, the former Yorkshire batsman, missed out on a central contract.

Lees, who now plays for Durham, was ever-present in the Test team last summer but averages 23.84 in 10 Test appearances.

The England management have backed him and Zak Crawley, his opening partner, who has retained his central contract.

But that Lees did not even receive an increment deal suggests that England do not yet see him as a permanent fixture.

Another to have retained his central contract is Jofra Archer, the pace bowler who has been sidelined through injury for over a year.

After two operations on his right elbow, Archer was set for a comeback at the start of the season only to suffer a back stress fracture. He is now back bowling and his deal is a nod to next year’s Ashes.

Ben Foakes, the wicketkeeper, and batsman Liam Livingstone are new recipients of full-time arrangements, which cover Test and limited-overs players and also take into account performances from the previous 12 months.

Commenting on the latest round of contracts, Rob Key, the managing director of England men’s cricket, said: “I feel we have rewarded those players who have made a significant impact over the previous 12 months and those we expect to be part of England’s plans over the next period.

“The international game continues to evolve, and we must be mindful that we have to lead the way in player performance across the sport.

“The aim is to develop world-class players in all three formats as we strive to become the best team in the world.

“I would like to congratulate all the players offered agreements for the coming year.
