The Australian left-hander was in fine touch against some probing bowling and looked on course for a well-deserved hundred.

But his innings ended shortly before the interval when he clipped a delivery from left-arm spinner Zafar Ansari straight to Gareth Batty at mid-wicket.

It was a tame demise for Jaques, who faced 169 balls and struck 12 fours and a six.

Resuming on 81-2 after lunch, Jaques and Kane Williamson were given a thorough working over by the Surrey bowlers, who deserved more than two wickets in the afternoon sunshine.

Matt Dunn, the 21-year-old pace bowler, was all over Williamson for a time, the New Zealander the other wicket to fall when he was bowled by a beautiful delivery from Ansari that turned, left him and clipped the top of off-stump.

Williamson scored 23 in one hour and 47 minutes, which emphasised that batting was never easy, and he added 88 in 32 overs with Jaques.

Alex Lees was the first man out, caught for eight by wicketkeeper Steven Davies off pace bowler Dunn.

Lees, who was yesterday named in the England Performance Programme to tour Australia, edged to Gary Wilson at third slip, who inadvertently parried the ball into Davies’s gloves.

Adam Lyth played nicely for 24 before being dismissed in maddening fashion.

The left-hander tried to turn a leg-side delivery from Dunn to the fine-leg boundary but did not get enough on the stroke and was caught by Davies.

Surrey: Sibley, Burns, Amla, Solanki, Davies, Wilson, Ansari, Jewell, Batty (captain), Linley, Dunn.
