Sussex and Notts hammer home advantage

SUSSEX SHARKS consolidated their position at the top of the Friends Provident t20 south group with a comfortable victory over Surrey Lions at The Oval.

Surrey collapsed from 57-1 to 119 all out to fall 39 runs short of Sussex's total and give the Sharks their seventh win in eight games.

Kiwi Brendon McCullum top scored for Sussex with 34 as they posted 158-7 before young leg-spinner Will Beer turned the game with the ball, taking 2-16.

Somerset maintained the pressure on Sussex by coasting to an emphatic fourth win of the campaign by 84 runs with nine balls to spare over Kent in Beckenham. The Sabres rattled up and impressive 189 built around an unbeaten 77 from man of the match James Hildreth and Jos Butler's 48 not out.

The visitors defended their total strongly as local lad Ben Phillips came back to haunt his former club with two for 24.

A controversial turning point helped Nottinghamshire consolidate top spot in the north group as they defeated Durham by 11 runs at Chester-le-Street. Chasing the visitors' 186-4, Durham were 134-4 when Dale Benkenstein pulled the first ball of the 16th over to deep square leg. Alex Hales held the catch off Darren Pattinson but staggered backwards over the rope and threw the ball back into play before regaining his balance to complete the catch.

After much deliberation, Benkenstein took it upon himself to accept Hales' word he was still inside the rope when he threw the ball up.

The batsman departed for 40 and although Durham, on 158-4 after 18 overs, were two ahead of Notts's score at the same stage Ryan Sidebottom virtually settled it by conceding only five off the 19th over.

Gareth Cross smashed a six off the penultimate ball to give Lancashire Lightning a dramatic victory over Warwickshire Bears at Old Trafford.

Despite a half-century from Tom Smith, Lancashire still needed 12 from seven balls chasing the visitors' 126-6 when the wicketkeeper strode to the middle.

He despatched the first delivery for four and after Keith Barker conceded just two off the first four balls of the final over, Cross sent the second ball he faced sailing over the boundary to wrap up a five-wicket win and condemn the Bears to only their second North Division defeat.

Derbyshire all-rounder Garry Park took three wickets as the visitors claimed an unlikely nine-run win over Northamptonshire.
