Third straight title is sealed by Wrenthorpe

WRENTHORPE are the first club for 52 years to lift the league championship for a third successive season.

With one match remaining, they have an unassailable 11-point lead over closest Premier Division rivals Methley after beating Altofts by 37 runs.

Oliver Whittaker (94) and Luke Patel (47) shared a century stand as Wrenthorpe recovered from 29-3 to post 247-8 and Altofts were bowled out for 210 in reply.

Altofts’ defeat was tough on all-rounder Jordan Sleightholme (42 and 5-57).

An opening 150-run partnership between Hamid Khan (73) and Nick Connolly (65no) steered Methley to a nine-wicket win against Mirfield Parish Cavaliers.

The fate of relegation candidates Batley and Birstall, who are level on points at the foot of the table, will be decided on the final day when they host Carlton and Altofts respectively.

Naweed Ghany (38no) was the only batsman who reached double figures as Batley were skittled for 58 in a three-wicket defeat against Wakefield Thornes, for whom Nadeera Nawela claimed 6-17.

Townville’s Jack Hughes (4-13), Wade Lezar (2-19) and Joe Finnigan (2-14) routed Birstall for 71.

Northowram Fields avoided relegation despite losing by one wicket at Carlton, who recovered from 140-7 to overhaul the visitors’ 208-5, thanks to Chris Smith’s unbeaten 40.

Moorlands, who are switching to the Huddersfield League next season, will finish in the top two in Division One which means only one team will be promoted and one side relegated from the Premier Division.

The championship will be decided next week when leaders Moorlands host Scholes and second-placed Ossett visit Oulton.

Moorlands retained a two-point lead by beating East Ardsley, while Ossett clinched promotion when Shoaib Latif (7-42) and Michael Edwards (97no) led them to a 122-run victory against Methley.
