Timely strike by Booth delights Collingham

Heart-stopping final-day matches at both ends of Division One finished up with Collingham adding the championship to their Waddilove Cup triumph and Ben Rhydding staging a great escape at the expense of last season’s champions Thackley.

Needing four points to secure the title, Collingham were restricted to 143 with Ollie Hardaker hitting an invaluable 48. Steeton responded positively, David Wildsmith leading the way with a half century, and despite Toby Jacklin’s 6-37, they got within eight of victory before Steve Booth produced the match-winning ball.

With Ricky Halloran taking 6-24, Thackley were dismissed for 71, a score only made that respectable by the addition of 35 by the last two pairs. Josh Atkinson scoring 45 as Otley won by seven wickets.

That left Ben Rhydding needing victory to climb above Thackley and stay up. Alex Robinson (78) and Johnny Wright (50no) saw Kirkstall set a target of 202-6 and after an opening stand of 37, it looked all up for Ben Rhydding when they lost three more wickets without adding a run and then collapsed to 70-6.

But No 3 Charlie Swallow (78no) was still there and he put on 87 with Laurie O’Connor (37) and an unbeaten 59 with Alex Miller (28no) to pull off an incredible victory.

Three wickets each for Neil Davies and Shane Etherington bowled out Bilton for 85 and Burley secured victory with three wickets in hand and, with Beckwithshaw losing at Follifoot, Burley are runners-up.

Relegated Adel slumped to a season low 65. Abid Awan (4-17) and Damon Reeve (3-19) did the damage, setting up a six-wicket win for Guiseley.

134-6 for the loss of one wicket but missed out on promotion by two points.
