Trescothick century hits Yorkshire

YORKSHIRE continued to struggle on the second day of their County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton.

The home side reached 272-2 at tea, having scored 160 runs in 35 overs during the afternoon session.

Somerset did not lose their first wicket until half-an-hour before the break.

Arul Suppiah pulled a rank long-hop from Adil Rashid to Steve Patterson at mid-wicket after scoring an excellent 95.

Suppiah and Marcus Trescothick added 257 for the first wicket in 62 overs.

Nick Compton fell on the stroke of tea when he was caught behind off Ajmal Shahzad for four.

Trescothick was unbeaten on 156 from 205 balls with 14 fours and four sixes, while Alex Barrow had yet to score.

In the morning, the visitors bowled well in patches but failed to make a breakthrough as the home side reached 112-0 at lunch in reply to Yorkshire’s 358.

Trescothick was unbeaten on 74 and Suppiah undefeated on 30, the pair having lifted Somerset from 7-0 overnight.

Trescothick had a let-off in the second over of the day when he edged Ryan Sidebottom inches in front of wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, and Suppiah was dropped on nine by Adil Rashid at third slip off Ajmal Shahzad.

Trescothick lofted Rashid for the first six of the match high over long-on in the penultimate over before lunch, with conditions still perfect for batting.

Oliver Hannon-Dalby has been Yorkshire’s best bowler, the young pace man having caused Trescothick one or two uncomfortable moments with his pace and bounce from the Old Pavilion End.
