Wait for century record goes on for Tendulkar

India claimed a comfortable five-wicket win in the opening Test against West Indies, but Sachin Tendulkar’s wait for a 100th international century goes on.

On Tuesday, the 38-year-old Mumbai great became the first man to reach 15,000 Test runs but remains on 99 centuries after being dismissed for 76 yesterday morning by Devendra Bishoo.

But his partnerships of 67 with Rahul Dravid (31) and 71 with VVS Laxman (61 not out) helped put India on the road to victory and the hosts secured the win – their first in seven Tests – just after lunch on the fourth day.

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said: “It feels good (to win), that’s what you always want to do as a team. But Test cricket, or in fact any format, doesn’t always go the way you want it to go, so it’s good to be on the winning side.”

Michael Clarke produced the best innings of his young Australia captaincy but South Africa edged an enthralling opening day of the first Test at Cape Town.

Clarke stood alone with an unbeaten century to help the tourists reach the close of a day shortened by rain and bad light at 214-8.

The 30-year-old defied a seaming Newlands wicket to score rapidly, finishing the day on 107 from 114 balls, all while his team-mates struggled against a Proteas attack led again by Dale Steyn, who took four wickets.
