White Rose can be rightfully proud of contribution to England since 2002

No fewer than 13 Yorkshire players have represented England in Tests since then – five more than Surrey, the next-best county.

Although those players and appearances have been suitably spread out, which means Yorkshire have not necessarily been more hampered than anyone else at any given time, it highlights the impresive job the club have done in identifying and nurturing top-class talent over recent years.

The trophy cabinet may well have been left bare as a result, but Yorkshire have done more than anyone in terms of the national interest, with an enviable cast list of skilful players.

Michael Vaughan and Matthew Hoggard, for example, were the county’s mainstays in the international team for many years.

Vaughan became England’s most successful Test captain, while Hoggard was a bit better than the workhorse tag that was always pinned on him.

In recent times, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Gary Ballance have continued the proud tradition, with Yorkshire having no fewer than four representatives on the recent Ashes tour if one includes Tim Bresnan, who was not in the initial party but travelled with the squad as he recovered from injury.

Indeed, despite that quartet being unavailable at times, Yorkshire are stronger now than at any period since 2002, when Vaughan and Hoggard were part of the side that tasted C&G success.

It is not only at full England level that Yorkshire have flourished.

Alex Lees and Liam Plunkett joined Bairstow on the recent Lions tour of Sri Lanka, while Will Rhodes, Karl Carver, Matthew Fisher, Josh Shaw and Jonathan Tattersall were all selected for the recent Under-19 World Cup.

Moin Hussain and Jared Warner have been invited to an elite training camp in Sri Lanka at Easter as part of the England Development Programme at Under-17 level, and there seems a never-ending production line of young Yorkshire players.

It is something which the county can be extremely proud of.
